Known for his residency at Soweto’s first premium mega entertainment venue, Zone 6 Venue, and being a radio presenter and producer on Africa’s number one internet radio, Trans Africa Radio, Nkanyezi Kubheka has since become one of the most promising musical talents in South Africa.
This young and talented man has shared a stage with South Africa’s talented DJ’s and artists like; Lisa Shaw, Josh Milan, Black Coffee, Black Motion, AKA, Zebra and Giraffe, Reason, Cassper Nyovest, DJ Fresh and Euphonik and many more.
Apart from being a DJ and radio personality, Nkanyezi Kubheka is also a brand influencer for Amstel Lager, Oude Meester, Skyy Vodka, Vodacom and Nokia Lumia. With all this happening for him, I got the chance to catch up with Nkanyezi to talk about his career as a DJ.
Q:When did you start DJing and what or who were your early passions and influences?
A:I started DJing professionally in 2013. I’ve always wanted to place music for the people, since way back as a kid, playing my dad’s cassettes and vinyls at home.
Q:What do you personally consider to be the incisive moments in your artistic career?
A:Playing at the biggest stages, concerts and sharing the same stage with South Africa’s biggest artists. That was when I’ve realized “this is actually happening” (laughs)
Q: Currently, what are your main challenges as a DJ?
A:The entertainment industry is too small, the more people you know, the more favours they want from you. And this is your job.
Q:What makes you decide to play a particular record during one of your sets? Is there a criteria other than pure subjectivity, for selecting what to play at a gig?
A:I’m known for playing music that people love and grew up listening to. If it’s good, I will play it. If people love it, I will play it. That’s my motto. Some gigs require a specific genre for that specific audience and that’s where your skills and knowledge of music gets tested.
Q:What other projects are you working on? Should we be on the lookout for anything?
A:I’m a radio host on Trans Africa Radio, weeknights from 8pm. I’m also a social media entrepreneur and an events organiser. That pretty much sums up my life.
Q:Please recommend two DJs to our readers which you feel deserve their attention.
A:Funky Soul from Durban. He is a creative DJ with a skill out of this world. Watch out for that dude. The second DJ has to be SoundQuest. He is a talented producer and DJ who is really underrated. That’s someone to look out for.
Q:What advice would you give to people that are new in this industry?
A:Do what you love, find ways to do it the way you want to and never stop believing.
