We’ve known him as Tumi and the Volume for over a decade and then he came back as Stogie T and gave us a mind blowing self-titled album.
He is known for releasing critically acclaimed hip hop music as well as being one of South Africa’s best producers. Before I get carried away, here’s what Stogie T had to tell you and I about what’s been happening around him and what to expect from him:
Q:Who is Stogie T and where is he from?
A: Stogie T is the hip hop artist formally known as Tumi and the Volume. I was born in Tanzania.
Q: Tell us about growing up in your area and having to break into the industry, how difficult was it?
A: I grew up in exile. Different countries across the world. Every year I had a new adventure, very exciting for a kid as you can imagine.
Q: How different is Stogie T from the Tumi we’ve known for over a Decade?
A: For one Stogie T is way more experienced than the guy who first came to prominence in 2003. Where Tumi saw the world from an optimistic perspective, Stogie is a little more cynical.
Q: In your experience thus far, what is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed? And one you didn’t follow, but now know for sure that you should’ve followed?
A: Best advice I didn’t follow was ‘you gotta fit in’. Best advice I followed ‘learn to say no’. I think I just said no in the past out of naivety, and a misplaced sense of morality.
Q: What aspect of the music making process excites you the most, and what aspect discourages you the most?
A: I am always excited by new technological advances that change how people consume music. I am distressed by the new technologies because one has to constantly adapt to the move.
Q: In your opinion, who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?
A: I would say Jay Z. He has transcended the streets and hip hop without abandoning them. Genius.
Q: Which latest songs, music videos or mixtape releases are currently available to your fans and where can they be heard or downloaded?
A: Diamond Walk video is out. By Any Means single is out.
Q: In closing, tell us something about any projects and ideas you have in store or are already working on for 2017.
A: I am brand ambassador for Chivas Regal.
